Neosho, Missouri is a town located in Macon County, Missouri. The population was 1,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield, MO Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Neosho was Levi Ladd who came to the area in 1836. He built a cabin on a hill overlooking the stream that now bears his name. A post office was established in 1837 and continued until it closed in 1907. In 1838, Daniel Boone discovered what would become Neosho Creek while exploring the area forays into this new country. He named his creek after himself and laid out a town site around it on high ground near present-day US Highway 24 and US Highway 63. This location would become home to many pioneers over time including John Sevier and James Wolkentinck who homesteaded there in 1840 and 1841 respectively. A school was organized at Neosho by David Farnsworth on November 3, 1847 which eventually became known as “Old High School”. In 1860, when Macon County wasOrganized under state law (it had been unorganized since 1792), Neosho became one of its first townships within that county boundaries - remaining so until 1890 when it won status as an incorporated village pursuant to an act of legislature session #2 (March 4th). The following year saw the installation of a school board with nine members made up of residents from various businesses adjacent to Old High School - serving grades Pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade at that time! For example, one story tells of how locals helped fund construction of the state Capitol following World War II; another relates how they helped support local farmers during times Of drought or depression; while yet another shares how they donated land for a Veterans Cemetery after WWI.
