Gun magazines have been around for centuries, and their history in Neosho, Missouri can be traced back to 1865. That year, the town of Neosho was founded by three brothers named George, John and Benjamin Russel. They soon realized that they needed a place to keep their firearms safe and secure. So they began construction on what would become the first gun magazine in Neosho. The magazine was built on the corner of Second Street and Elm Street. It served as a storage depot for handguns and other firearms until 1875. The first issue of the new Neosho Gun Club Magazine was published on February 15th, 1865. The original editor-in-chief was Isham Huggins. It was an eight-page issue with sixteen issues being published between 1865 and 1876. Issue #8 featured a photograph of Grover Cleveland holding a revolver while he attended a celebration at his home in Springfield Heights. In 1868, the club started publishing its own newspaper called the News from NEOSHO (Neosho Gazette). It lasted until 1871 when it became part of the Des Moines Register Company’s paper chain. From then on, it was known as the Iowa City Register (ICR). Finally, in 1907, it reverted to its previous name – The Neosho Gun Club Magazine! The community was established on the north bank of Neosho Creek in 1837 by fur traders and settlers from Illinois. In 1847, the first post office was opened in Neosho; it continued to serve until 1978. In 1871, a gristmill was built, becoming one of the few remaining businesses in Neosho after its closure around World War II. In 1955, Neosho's only store closed and all local commerce ceased operations; however, a new store opened in 1957 which remains open today as the sole source of local commerical services for residents and tourists alike. Neosho has been home to numerous colleges and universities over the years: Saline-St. Joseph State University (1927), Northern Illinois University (1941), Northwest Missouri State University (1948), Kansas Wesleyan University (1959), Southern Illinois University Carbondale (1972), Western Kentucky University (1985) and Webster Groves Community College (1996). A branch library has been located within walking distance of every home since its opening in 1969; this library currently serves more than 15,000 books including 350 computer resources!
