Neosho is a town in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. Neosho was founded in 1836 as a farming community by settlers from Illinois and Indiana. The first store was built in 1839 and the first school in 1840. In 1845, Neosho became the county seat of St. Francois County and the town prospered as a center for trade and transportation on I-270. The Onondaga Canal ran through Neosho from 1847 to 1861; during that time, it attracted heavy industry including mills, sawmills, and coal mines. As railroads came into existence after Reconstruction in 1865, Neosho became an important transportation hub with two passenger trains arriving daily at its depot on US 60 leading to Springfield and other nearby townships. In 1927, when Neosho incorporated as a municipality, it had a population of 3,609; by 1990 it had increased to 9,815 (more than twice its original size). The growth has been due not only to increasing employment opportunities but also to suburban development within walking distance of downtown: since 1990 Neosho has seen more than one million visitors each year who have enjoyed its attractions - such as history museums and retail corridors – without ever having to leave their homes or drive long distances away! Neosho is a town in Clay County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,541 at the 2010 census. Neosho is part of the Springfield, MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by brothers George and Jacob Hecker in 1848. The Hecker brothers named the town after their paternal grandfather Noel Shoeemaker who had settled in the area in 1836. In 1851, they built a store and post office on Main Street between School and Market Streets. A school was built in 1872 and another in 1876; both were operated as schools until 1982 when they became private academies. The first grocery store opened in 1898 on Third Street near Railroad Avenue. In 1902, Neosho lost its charter to become an independent village; it reverted to township status two years later but remained under full municipal control until it merged with Springfield on January 1, 2006 to form the current city of Springfield. Neosho was first settled in 1836 by Lewis and Clark Expedition members on the Missouri River. The town was named after General John Neosho, who served as a topographical mapmaker on the expedition. The town was platted in 1839 and renamed Neosho in honor of General Neosho. In 1861, the Union army burned down the courthouse and jail in Neosho during the American Civil War. After the war, Neosho became an agricultural center with a large cotton gin and other agriculture related businesses. The population peaked at around 507 in 1920 but declined to around 400 by 1940.
