Neosho, Missouri is a small town in Warren County, Missouri, United States. The population was 597 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City Metropolitan Statistical Area. Neosho is located near the confluence of the Kaw and Pawnee Rivers. The first permanent settler in Neosho was James Hargrave who arrived in 1837. He and his family built a cabin on the site of what is now Main Street. In 1840, David Halliday settled here, followed by John Armour in 1843. The town took its name from General Anthony Armstrong who fought against Mexican forces during the American Civil War at Neosho Creek Bridge on November 15, 1861. In 1865, Post Office No. 2 was established and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1970; it had been moved to Shawnee Mission from nearby Chanute before that date (see History of Chanute Village). The first school opened for students in September 1870 under teacher Mrs Fenton Welch; it continued operation until May 1892 when it became an academy under Superintendent Joeseph Sibley with Miss Lillie Snively as its first female student; she taught there until her death in 1926 (see history of Neosho High School). The present day Main Street was laid out through township land purchase by Capt Elisha Stroudsbury and others early in this century after he donated much lumber necessary for erecting various buildings within the new community including a courthouse which met originally on State Route 24 but burned down soon after being erected It wasn’t until 1930 when a bridge over Kaw River was completed providing transportation between town and adjacent farmlands that Neosho finally developed into an actual village center! A post office operated at one time west of present day Main Street (the old post office building) prior to 1940 which may have been due to its location near where Kaw River Valley Road intersects current day NE corner street just south or east of modern day Main Street: “Neosho PO Box # 55” Although closed today according to USPS records no one knows for certain if this ever actually received mail! However given how close main street has become since then we can only assume that if ever did receive mail it likely got delivered right past those peskypostmodern security measures ;)

Neosho, Missouri is a small town located in far north-central Missouri. It was founded in 1871 by General James W. Neosho and his wife, Emma. The Neoshos were the first people to inhabit the area that now makes up Neosho. The town had a population of about 100 residents when it was founded and only grew to around 150 until the early 1900s. The history of Neosho can be traced back to 1871, when General James W. Neosho and his wife, Emma, came to live near present-day Neosho on the banks of the Missouri River. At that time, this part of modern day Missouri was still part of Indiana Territory and there were no towns or settlements within easy reach of what is now central Illinois. In order to provide for their growing family, the Neshos built a cabin on land they purchased east of present-day Interstate 70 in what is now known as Old Town (later renamed University). They also started farming west of I-70. It wasn't until 1875 that General James W. Neosho organized a group of settlers who would later become known as the "Neosho Volunteer Battalion." This unit served during the Mexican American War and helped drive off Mexican forces from central Nebraska before moving south into Kansas Territory where they fought against Sitting Bull's Sioux tribe at Little Bighorn in September 1876. Upon their return home, these veterans formed an organization called "Neshoba County Volunteers" which helped organize school children into classes for local farmers while also providing military training for local boys and men who wanted to become self-reliant warriors like themselves someday. In 1882, General James W. Neosho sold his holdings in Old Town along with two other parcels totaling one acre to brothers Amos Hodge and Orville Hodge Sr.. These land purchases provided enough financial security for the new families to purchase more land surrounding their original cabin so that they could continue farmingsteading west of I-70 and east of present day US Highway 54 known then as Holcomb Road/Old Telephone Rd./Shady Grove Rd.). The total area would amount to just over three acres today! Over time, many other families joined these pioneer farmers in working these new lands including my great grandparents Major Lew Wallace Norris (1886), Newton Sargent (1904), John Fenton (1920), Myron Beardsley (1927) & Rollin Norris (1929). A few years later - in 1886 - Amos Hodge married Anna Loyd Smith who would eventually give birth to four children: Lew Wallace Norris II; Anna Louise; Melvin Edwin; Jr.; Rollin Norris III.) With this additionto the family tree came another important milestone as Anna Loyd Smith became Mrs.(?) George Washington Higgins!!! This marriage marked not onlythe beginningof a long & successful relationship between Amos Hodge Sr., George Washington Higgins Sr., & Annabelle(Ann) Higgins but alsomarkedthebeginningofa lifelong friendship between Annabelle(Ann) Higgins & Rev.(Rev.)George Washington Higgins Jr!!!!! In 1903 Rev.(Rev.)George Washington Higgins Jr., died suddenly after an extended illness& Annabelle(Ann)Higgins took over leadershipof her father's congregation which continued until her death ca 1946
