Neosho, Missouri is a small town in Douglas County, Missouri. The population was 1,834 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Springfield-St. Louis metropolitan area. Neosho was named for Daniel Neosho and his family who settled the village in 1837. In 1854, a post office was established in the village and it continued to be called Neosho until 1907 when it changed its name to Prairie View. In 1907, a school was founded in the village and it continues to be known as Prairie View School since that time. The community has experienced several expansions over the years including an agricultural college which opened in 1951 and now offers degrees from various programs; an industrial park built in 1985 which includes restaurants, retail stores and office space; and a new housing development completed in 2001 which included homes, businesses and schools. A new water tower was constructed on Highway 36 near the community center in 2003 which provides drinking water for all of Neosho as well as other towns within Douglas County. In early 2010, interest began developing around developing a large mixed-use project consisting of both residential units (mainly condos) as well as commercial/industrial buildings located near Interstate 44/Upper Merrimack Road adjacent to Prairie View School District headquarters complex on property owned by Johnson Controls Incorporated throughout much of what is today NEOSHO Village proper with certain parcels annexed by NEOSHO Township along with limited access through Downtown NEOSHO between I-44 & UMPER Merrimack Rd., removing any remaining barriers between Village residents & their jobsites just east of downtown Springfield downtown strip with riverfront views across interstate highway
