Neosho is a small town in southwestern Missouri, United States. The population was 2,904 at the 2010 census. It is part of St. Joseph County. The town was founded in 1839 by General David Neosho and settlers from Illinois and other states who arrived on the Kansas-Neosho Railroad. The first post office was opened in 1840, and the first store was built in 1841. In 1860, Neosho became the county seat of St. Joseph County, but it reverted to its original name in 1888 when Neosho incorporated as a village. Neosho has been home to several newspapers over the years: "The Neosho Journal" (1840-1908), "The Neoshoan" (1888-1927), "The Sun Democrat" (1920-2007), "The News Tribune" (2008-present) and "St. Joseph Independent". In 2007, the town voted to become an all-Volunteer Fire Department station; this happened after many residents voiced their concerns about how they would be able to cover fire safety duties if they were not part of a larger local agency. The village also established a fund for firefighter training expenses which has helped cover numerous costs such as uniforms and equipment since its establishment.
Neosho was founded by a group of Mormon pioneers in 1837. The town grew rapidly with the arrival of new settlers and soon became one of the most important agricultural centres in Missouri. It was also an important stop on the Underground Railroad, helping fugitive slaves escape to freedom. In 1861, Neosho came under military rule after the United States purchased it frombraska Territory for $10,000. In 1871, Neosho became part of the newly formed Kansas Territory and continued to grow as a cattle and agriculture centre until its annexation by Oklahoma in 1907.
