Moberly is a city in and the county seat of Moberly County, Missouri, United States. The population was 9,865 at the 2010 census. The community has been located on the eastern edge of the American Midwest for more than 200 years. It was named after General Andrew Jackson's campaign against Native Americans in 1811. Moberly began as an agricultural village on the east bank of the Arkansas River. A post office called Moberly was established in 1827, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The town site was platted by John Bircher in 1836 and first known as "New Town", since it had not yet been surveyed. In 1837, James Ketchum purchased land adjacent to what is now Moberly from Nicholas Benton for $2 per acre (0.40¢ per foot). He renamed it "Moberly" after General Jackson's campaign against Native Americans that year. The first school building was built near present-day US Highway 62 and US Highway 183 in 1838; it served as a Methodist church until 1840 when a Baptist chapel was built nearby on Main Street. A courthouse and jail were also constructed during this time period around what is now downtown Moberly. In 1850, two square miles (about 6 km²) south of Moberly along reasonably well-traveled Route 66 were laid out as Pryor Township with a post office called Pryor corresponding to that township designation only; both townships lost their status when localities were organized into Thurston County within Missouri Statehood in 1888. In 1861, Union soldiers burned down large parts of Pryor Township while retreating from Springfield during the American Civil War; this event is generally considered to have started World War II in Oklahoma City properEditors note: There are several theories about why Union troops burned down Pryor Township - some say they did so because they did not like its alignment with Confederate lines (the area lay between Springfield and St Louis), while others claim that Commanding General William Tecumseh Sherman wanted revenge for being thwarted at Missionary Ridge Edit See main article: World War II in Missouri . residents rebuilt much of their homes following the war; by 1890, there were over 100 businesses operating in town hall alone (). After joining Missouri Statehood on January 15, 1888 (), Moberley became part of Brown County within that newly created jurisdiction.. On November 3rd 1910 voters approved annexation by Rock Island County which occurred effective January 1st 1911 due to Rock Island's lack of representation on the county board;; however rock island refused to ratify annexation until they got satisfactory assurances from neighboring cities that they would not be encroached uponeditSee main article: annexation controversy ]. On May 5th 1912 referendum results showed 55% approval for incorporation into Pettine Township.; however Pettine failed to become an incorporated municipality until 1916 when new officials decided that incorporation would be less headacheous than having two separate municipalities administrated by different entities., making Pettine one continuous municipality with its own governing body for just under 20 years before finally becoming defunct againeditSee main article: Pettine municipality]. By 1920 many businesses had moved away from downtown due to prohibition efforts which had begun nationally soon afterwards editSee main article: Prohibition era ]. In 1924 MoberLYs centennial celebration marked 50 Years Of Progress With A Parade And Picnic.] In 1933 much progress had been made towards developing an indoor shopping mall but funding problems kept pushing back construction dates] On October 10th 1934 voters passed a resolution designating September 8th 1935 as National Homecoming Day]; this day has various festivities throughout town such as parades and picnics]. On May 25th 1938 another referendum successfully ratified annexation into Pettine Township.; hereafter Pettine became one continuous municipality once again ]. As mentioned earlier many businesses left downtown after prohibition ended but all commerce returned within 3 years or so]. Today Mobelys economy revolves largely around its location – approximately 60%of jobs are located within 2 miles (3 km) radius], its staunch support for education,[10] its sister city relationship with Tulsa,[11] and its close proximity to major metropolitan areas such as Kansas City[12][13][14][15][16]
