Moberly, Missouri is a small town located in the Ozarks of central Missouri. The community was founded in 1847 by settlers from Illinois and Kansas. Moberly became an important railroad town during the early 20th century and has since become an agricultural center with a population of about 16,000. Moberly is a city in Webster County, Missouri, United States. The population was 3,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. Moberly was founded on December 10, 1836 by General James K. Polk and his wife Rachel Wilkinson Polk as a sawmill town named for George Moberly, an early settler in what is now Webster County. The name "Moberly" has been spelled various ways including Moerly, Mogerville and Molerville until 1892 when it was changed to Moberly after General James K. Polk's daughter-in-law Eleanor Roosevelt moved to the community from New York City with her husband Franklin D. Roosevelt. Moberly experienced a rapid growth following World War II due to its strategic location as a key transportation hub on the Missouri River between St Louis and Kansas City. In the 1950s and 1960s, Moberly became known for its annual corn festival that attracted thousands of people from around the Midwest and Northeast each year. The festival remains one of the most popular events in town today. In 2007, then-Mayor Tom Brunner announced that he would not seek re-election because he felt he had accomplished more than his predecessor since taking office six years earlier. Brunner left office with one term remaining in office; since then Mayor John Wehner has led Moberly through some very active times including joining forces with other cities in order to form MOBILE (Missouri Boulevard Improvement District). In November 2009 Mayor John Wehner announced that they were moving their city hall from downtown to a new facility adjacent toVeterans Memorial Park which will house all municipal services within easy reach of all residents including library access, parks & recreation programming and government meetings/meetings with state representatives etc...
Moberly was founded by James and Catharine Moberly in 1809. The Missouri Compromise of 1821 provided for the admission of Missouri as a slave state, but the Moberlys refused to sell their slaves. In 1824, they were forced to flee Missouri due to violence between Native Americans and white settlers. They settled in what is now West Virginia.
