Moberly is a small town in Johnson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. The community is located on the confluence of the Moberly and Arkansas Rivers. It is part of the Springfield, MO-IL Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first known resident of what would become Moberly was David Aiken in 1819. He built a cabin near the present day intersection of US Highway 36 and Missouri Route 9. In 1824, Isaac Babcock established a ferry across the Arkansas River which allowed travelers between Nauvoo and Moberly to cross without having to go through Illinois. In 1827, William Bigham set up a blacksmith shop in what would become Moberly. In 1829, John Hargrave arrived from Massachusetts with his family and started to farm land east of town along present day US Highway 36. By 1830, several other families had also settled in what would eventually become Moberly including John Atkins (1830), James Caldwell (1831), Nathan Knowles (1832-34), Asa Whitney (1835-37), Ebenezer Smith (1838-40) and George Whitefield (1841). On February 26th, 1880, during an all out prairie fire that destroyed much of central Missouri due to burning by cattle rustlers led by Jesse Loyd Wernick Greeley II., about one third of the residents living within three miles of where they now live were killed or burned out as they attempted to flee their homes for refuge inside Nauvoo Temple Complex while it still stood standing however most managed to return home safely before nightfall that same day after being advised by temple leaders not leave until morning so as not to alarm those living nearer by who could have returned home before then had done so thereby sparing them from total destruction as well as any possible loss suffered should../the temple been consumed completely thus preventing anyone from escaping unburned buildings/property lay scattered throughout central Illinois when finally burned later that year reaching its peak concurrent with Nauvoo’s final days left only smouldering ruins remaining today atop former mill dam site overlooking downtownMoberly post office opened January 1st 1861 under name Post Office Depot

Moberly was founded in 1837 by John Moberly and his brothers Lawrence and Jameson. The first post office was established in Moberly on December 6, 1837. Moberly had a population of 2 people when it became a town on July 1st, 1840. At the time it was one of the smallest towns in Missouri with a population of 24 people as of 1840. The first store in Moberly was built on Main Street about two miles west of present day Moberly High School. The store operated for about 10 years before being closed down due to lack of business competition and high costs associated with opening a new store within such an isolated community. In 1851 John Moberly donated land to build what would become Grace Methodist Episcopal Church which now stands on Main Street cornering East First Avenue and South Second Street across from Present Day US Post Office (now known as Old US Post Office). Mr. & Mrs. Pugh were instrumental in building this beautiful church which has served the community since its construction date in 1851-52 according to historical records dating back to that time frame! Reverend Drury preached at Grace Methodist Episcopal Church until his death in 1889 after having served as pastor there for more than 50 years!
