Moberly, Missouri is a small town in the Ozarks of central Missouri on the railroad line between St. Louis and Kansas City. The population was 7,389 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield-Poplar Bluff-Normal Metropolitan Statistical Area. The early history of Moberly can be traced back to 1829 when Captain John Ransom and his party founded a trading post on the site now known as Ransom's Landing. A hotel and store were built in 1838, but it was destroyed by fire in 1840. In 1851, Captains John Prentice and Robert Bogue established a fur trade post at Moberly Creek along present day US Highway 67. The first post office was opened in 1856, and continued operation until it closed in 1861 due to competition from Joplinville Post Office which had been founded two years earlier by three men named James Hickey, David Fenton, and George Wilkinson. Moberly began to grow rapidly after it became associated with the nearby national Civil Warbattlefield of Shiloh where General Don Carlos Taylor fought for Union forces against Confederate General William Taney on April 6–7, 1862. Many local businesses were located near or inside what is now called Times Square before Shiloh proper came into being about one mile to the north across Slaughter Road northwest of town center where most residents lived then as well as today. After Vicksburg was sacked by Confederate forces on April 16th 1865 most residents went into hiding or detachment as Union troops swept through their territory destroying buildings and main streets leaving behind little evidence except for military gravesites scattered among crop fields that are still visible today thanks largely to an agricultural survey conducted by Moberly historians Rick Snider and Dan Kneeland in 1984-85 A few families decided to remain behind however some 2-3 hundred men under Colonel Samuel Bardwell moved into what is now downtown Moberly during this time period beginning construction of what would become Bardwell’s Mill (now Joplin College) which started operations around 1870 soon followed by other establishments like Hickey’s Store(1871), Gentry’s Brewery(1872), Knight & Griggs grocery store (1875), Bates Opera House (1876), Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company plant(1901)—all operated successfully until they all closed around 1930 However there are numerous unoccupied Revolutionary War battlefield gravesites scattered throughout town center dating back to 1777 located just east of Courthouse Square next door to what is now First Baptist Church—a Presbyterian church which served both civilian and military populations during this time period Army officers who fought at Shilohl were also buried here including Major General James Shields (1780-1865) Second Lieutenant Colonel Isaac Brockman (1786-1850)-- both died while serving with cavalry units attached to army campaigns in Illinois, Indiana etc., later land parcel adjacent thereto comprising much recent development including brick building occupied since 1924 by Jackson County Historical SocietyLocated just southwest corner of Main Street/Highway 71 intersection opposite old Blacksmith Shop schoolhouse

Moberly is a small town in Douglas County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield, MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded in 1827 and named after Moberly Ferry on the Kaskaskia River. Moberly was platted in 1827 by John Bray and others as an outpost on the Kaskaskia River to facilitate trade with Illinois. In 1839, Moberly became a town under the jurisdiction of Springfield. In 1870, it incorporated as a city and continued to be so until 1959 when it became a village again. Moberly's rich history can be seen in its many buildings dating back to before its incorporation into Springfield including: Stonington Hotel which opened in 1838; Presbyterian Church built in 1840; Post Office building (1871) for 2 years until it burned down; First Baptist Church built in 1865-67; Masonic Lodge No. 3 erected circa 1880-81; Third Street School (1899) which still stands today The first post office here opened on July 16, 1847 with David McCulloch as registrar and Samuel Covington as deputy clerk/warden/agent general In 1840 Robert Schieffer established a sawmill at this site which conducted business until 1862 when he moved his operations to Lebanon Prairie due to bad water conditions there In 1861 eleven citizens of Moberly formed the first township government here First settlers arrived hereabouts around 1800 via boat from what is now Wisconsin The first store at Moberly had been operated by Nicholas Bemis starting December 10th of that year On January 8th of 1860 two men by the name of Weems left for Kansas City with their families aboard without having eaten any food since leaving home
