In 1861, after more than two centuries of conflict between slave owners and free people of color (and various changes within Missouri itself), slavery was abolished statewide in all levels across America with only 9 percent remaining active statewide (down from over 60 percent several decades earlier). This event created significant economic opportunities for Moberly as well as other portions of western Missouri following passage of new state laws enabling those freedoms such as education for African Americans and women that had previously not been possible under slaveowners' control. Moberly, Missouri is a small town in the state of Missouri. The population was 3,811 at the 2010 census. Moberly is located on the banks of the Missouri River and is part of the Springfield metropolitan area. It has been called "the Fertile Crescent" because of its rich agricultural history. The town was founded in 1825 by General David Dixon and his fellow officers of Company K, Second Regiment Missouri Volunteer Infantry. They were looking for a place to winter while they awaited reinforcements from St. Louis. Dixon named the settlement after Mount Moberly in Scotland, which he had seen when campaigning there during the War of 1812. The first buildings were built near what is now Main Street and West Market Street. In 1830, Dixon donated land to build a courthouse and jail, both still standing today as part of Dixons Landing Park on the east side of Main Street between Court and Market Streets. Moberly grew slowly until it became an important fur-trading center in central Missouri during the late 1800s (see Fur trade in Missouri). By 1904, Moberly had become an important community with over 1,000 residents and two churches (Methodist and Presbyterian). On July 10th that year, Moberly was incorporated as a village under State Act No. 1012A (1904), with boundaries that included present-day Springfield Township on one side and Brush Creek Township on the other side just south of Interstate 270/I-64/US Highway 24 interchange within current County Road 522 east of downtown Springfield – making it one half mile wide at its widest point along Brush Creek Township line In 1916 local men organized their own military unit known as "Moose Squadron" consisting only men 25 years or older who lived within easy driving distance of Moberley itself; all citizens were required to join this unit regardless thereof political beliefs or actions taken against those considered enemies during World War I; Moose Squadron operated successfully until disbanded in 1919 Today souvenir shops are open throughout downtown Moberley every day from 9am to 4pm from midtown downriver towards downtown Springfield
Moberly was founded in 1836 by a group of Missouri farmers led by John Moberly. The town grew rapidly and soon outgrew its original location, moving to the nearby village of Moberly Ford in 1840. In 1848, Moberly became the county seat of Polk County following the creation of that region from part of Madison County. The population reached 100,000 by 1860, and growth continued until 1890 when the advent of railroads caused a decline in population. By 2000, Moberly had shrunk to its current size as a result of suburban development.
