The first permanent settler in what is now Moberly was Nicholas Pemberton, who arrived there about 1800 and erected a log cabin on an island near the present day courthouse square. Pemberton's wife, Mary (Ferguson), also came to live here about 1800. Other early settlers included James Kincaid and his family, which arrived around 1814; John Iverson with his family, which got land hereabouts about 1830; John Cook with his family, which arrived around 1840; Isaac Shaver with his family, which got land hereabouts about 1850; Elijah Hite with his family from Kentucky around 1860-1861; and George Waring from Ohio circa 1865-1868. A post office called "Moberly" was established in 1847 by Samuel Jephson at what is now the northeast corner of Court Square and Fourth Street. The original postmaster was Absalom Woodruff Sr., whose son Absalom Jr., served as Postmaster from 1861 until 1865 when he resigned because of military service during the American Civil War . In 1870 Amos Fenton opened a store at what is now Third Avenue and Main Street in downtown Moberly while still living at home with his parents . By 1886 Fenton had moved out to open a store on West Market Street near downtown where he remained until 1897 when he died suddenly after serving as Mayor of Moberly for four years
