Moberly is a small town in the Ozarks of Missouri, United States. It was founded in 1836 byodus German settlers. Ammunition production began in Moberly in 1853 and continued until 1912. The town has two factories still extant: the first opened in 1903 and manufactured ammunition for the Union army during World War I, while the second opened in 1962 and manufactures artillery rounds, mortar rounds, and rifle rounds. In 1911, Moberly became home to the world's first self-Loader shotgun magazine manufacturing plant. The company manufactured shotguns with magazines built into them as well as later on rifles and pistols. In 1951, Armour Ammunition Manufacturing Company Incorporated was established here with a mandate to produce high quality military ammunition products for American law enforcement agencies around the world. The company remains a separate entity to this day with operations located at 4355 Old Route 66 South in Moberly. The munitions industry has had an impact on both local communities and national economies throughout history; it has contributed $5 billion USD to Missouri’s economy since 2002 alone according to data from market research firm IBISWorld Ltd.. Mahan also donated land for what would become Moberly Park which opened in 1922.
