The Mexican Americans were successful in repelling the attack and routing the U.S. force. A year later, on November 10th of that year, General James Wooten ordered all Mexicans living east of the Pecos River to leave their homes as part of a border protection measure known as "The Gadsden Purchase." This order effectively ended Mexico's trade with Texas and other parts of the United States for goods exported to Mexico from east of the Rio Grande. On December 1st, 1871, Missouri law enforcement officer John Tipton fatally shot Antonio Zamora after an altercation between Zamora and Tipton over a horse grazing near Interstate 40 in Osage County, Missouri. Zamora had been attempting to cross into Missouri from Arkansas when he was stopped by Tipton and then killed by him outside of Osage City Limits

Mexico, Missouri was founded in 1836 by Don Carlos Manuel de la Torre and the city of Mexico was named for him. The town grew rapidly due to its location on a trading route between the United States and Central America and its proximity to the Kansas River. By 1861, Mexico had a population of over 20,000 people and was host to an annual cattle fair that attracted hundreds of settlers from Kansas. In 1865, the Union Army invaded Mexico and conquered it as part of General Ulysses S. Grant's general offensive against Confederate forces in the Midwest. As part of this campaign, Mexican president Antonio López de Santa Anna ordered his army to retreat into Texcoco County within Mexican territory. This action violated international law which forbade any country's military forces from entering its territory without authorisation from both sides. As a result of this conflict, many Mexicans who were living in Missouri died during the war or lost their property when their land was seized by Union troops.
