Mexico is a country located in the southwestern corner of North America, bordered by the United States to the south and east, and by Canada to the north. The country has a population of over 15 million people and covers an area of more than 26,000 square kilometers. The capital and largest city is Mexico City. Other important cities include Monterrey, Tijuana, and Puebla. The history of Mexico begins with its official declaration as a free republic on February 14th, 1821 by Agustín de Iturbide. After years of struggle for independence from Spain, Mexico became an independent nation on July 1st, 1821. Today, Mexico is one of the most developed countries in Latin America with strong economic indicators. The country has experienced great political stability since it attained its independence from Spain; many presidents have served two terms without interruption. Some of the major industries in which Mexico appears to be successful are finance/business services (Finance Minister Antonio Garzón), manufacturing (steel producer Carlos Slim), agriculture (livestock ranchers such as Vicente Fox), information technology (facebook founder Eduardo Elizondo) and real estate development (the Mexican government owns almost 50% of all real estate in North America). However there are also concerns that recent changes in NAFTA could hurt Mexican businesses if they do not receive similar treatment as American companies when it comes to tariffs or other trade measures levied against them by their US counterparts
