The Mexican War (1846-48) was a conflict fought between the United States of America and Mexico. The war began on October 20, 1846, when American forces invaded Mexico City from the north. Mexican president Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna ordered his army to resist the invaders, but he was soon outmaneuvered and defeated. In response, U.S. President James K. Polk declared war on Mexico on November 2, 1846. The war escalated as American forces attacked Mexican cities and towns with impunity. On December 1, 1846, Mexico announced that it would no longer recognize the U.S.-sponsored government in California; this move angered both sides of the conflict and resulted in more civilian deaths. As American forces advanced into what is now Texas, they were met by an organized Mexican resistance movement led by General Felix Rodriguez y Salinas. After a bloodycombat which lasted for several months, Polk finally arrived at Monterrey on January 6, 1847 with an overwhelming force to crush Rodriguez's resistance once and for all.
