After passing through SarahsVILLE, Union troops stopped at Maryville for dinner; they were later called back because of darkness and possible Confederate ambush waiting for them near Cairo Junction northwest of Springfield. In 1865, after Reconstruction ended in America following the American Civil War, Maryville became part of Stroudsburg County within Kansas Territory. The next year (1866), it changed hands multiple times between Kansas Territorial governments before finally joining Warren County when that county was created from parts of Douglas and Pawnee Counties in 1889. It remained with Warren County until 1959 when it joined Clay County as one of three county townships within that county along with Cape Girardeau and Independence (the other two being Jacksonville and Florissant). Today much remains unchanged from those early days: The town has retains its name as well as its courthouse which still stands on Main Street; many businesses remain open such as JCPenney & Co., KFC/McDonald's/Burger King restaurants etc.; even their ZIP code still reflects their pioneer roots including 76522 which is still used today
