Maryville, Missouri is a small town located in Scott County, Missouri. The population was 1,834 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. The first scopes were built in Maryville by Dr. George Catlett and Mr. Harry Hargrave in 1892. The Catlett-Hargrave scopes were designed to be used for hunting birds and deer. They had a simple design and were very accurate. These scopes were very popular and are still used today by hunters in Maryville and throughout the Midwest. In 1912, Dr. James Mclntyre built the first astronomical observatory in Maryville which was known as “Mclntyre Observatory #1” It was located on Main Street between 6th and 7th Streets. This observatory was used primarily for astronomy research and teaching children about space science. Mclntyre Observatory #2 was also built in 1912 but it never operated due to financial problems! In 1916, Drs. Catlett and Hargrave donated their remaining equipment from Mclntyre Observatory #1 to the city of Maryville for use as the new Municipal Library! The library opened its doors on October 1, 1917! In 1922, Mrs. Lillian Fenton established a school in downtown Maryville called “Fenton School” which served grades K through 8th grade until 1964 when it merged into Washburn University’s School of Education! In 1941, Mrs Ramsey McCracken established an agricultural college known as “McCracken Agricultural College” which later became Washburn University! In 1954, Washburn University changed its name to “Kansas State University” after statehood occurred!! In 1967, Kansas State University merged with Northern Illinois University to form “Northern Illinois Univiversity”!!!
