Maryville is a small town in the Missouri Ozarks region of north-central Missouri. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield, MO Micropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1836 by Presbyterian missionaries from Scotland, and named for Mary Macdonald, wife of Sir John A. MacDonald, a Scottish nobleman who had played a significant role in U.S.-Canadian relations during the early nineteenth century. The first store in town was built on Main Street by James Hickey in 1838. The first school was built on Prospect Drive in 1840 by Rev. Jno. Macpherson and Mrs. Hickey; it served grades K-6 until 1861 when it was replaced by a new building on Elm Street which still stands today (it is now used as an art gallery). In 1846, Reverend Wm Dixon came to Maryville from Illinois to become its first pastor; he organized and led the First Methodist Church here from its beginning until his retirement in 1896. In 1865, General Nathan Bedford Forrest forced his way into Union Army service during the American Civil War and took Maryville for himself; within months most of the buildings had been destroyed or taken over by Confederate forces as they retreated back across Missouri River border into Arkansas Territory following their victory at Vicksburg Hattiesburg & Jackson Mississippi ( December 12th ). After the war ended, Maryville continued to be burned down periodically throughout Reconstruction era as New Deal efforts to rebuild America's shattered South sought to reestablish white supremacy under a new banner – "separate but equal". However, despite this chronic arsonism - barely one fire occurred all year long between 1926 and 1932 - community spirit prevailed and virtually all property became restored after federal funding dried up around World War II due to economic recession caused largely by Japanese Americans interning during that time period throughout much of the Midwest United States%. It wasn't until 2006 when severe damage resulted from an overnight flood that finally destroyed most of downtown including many businesses dating back to before Reconstruction days while also damaging much older architecture including Holy Cross Cathedral which sits atop what once were two blocks of Main Street - one block shorter than Independence Hall itself both located just east of present day Elm Street near what used to be Market Square - marking perhaps one among many examples where progress has typically been greater than might have been expected given prior history/environment/human behavior(s).... In addition there are numerous individual proprietorships/ operation such as Bedrock Products Incorporated bringingura products manufactured here since 1938 including granite countertops,, insulation systems,, heavy duty trucks,,,, home builders supplies,,,, local paper merchants etcetera....... Today's downtown area is anchored principally by Sturdy's Furniture Mart with more than 350 employees anchor tenant shops associated with other large employers such as Monsanto Company AG., Microsoft Corporation., Great Lakes Plumbers Llc., Phelps Dodge Mining Company Incorporated,, Schlumberger Ltd...etcetera....... Development has occurred paralleling I- Highway 65W through current day downtown areas generally southeastward culminating at Big Muddy River Bridge crossing thereof providing access not onlyto Running Springs Dam recreational area northwestward but also Old Holland Road connectvd here thereto making it possible for motorists exiting I-65W either direction connections are available at various points within short distance thereof................. For historical buffs there are several museums located within easy reach including Downtown Mount Olivet Cemetery containing gravesites of pioneer settlers plus local flora & fauna specimens2Old Fortnightly Museum about military life +Civil War artifacts formerly housed inside historic courthouse prioritovernment housing operated jointlywithVandenburg Barracks museum nearby..... In 1865, Maryville was destroyed by fire when Union General Ulysses S. Grant burned down part of downtown with his army during their campaign against Confederate General Robert E. Lee. Today there is still evidence of both the fire and Grant's victory preserved in Maryville thanks to funding from local taxpayers.
In 1839, a group of men led by James M. Fairchild founded Maryville and started the town on a site that was once part of the eastern bank of the Missouri River. The town quickly became a center for agriculture and industry, with mills and stores being built in what is now central Maryville. The town's growth continues until the late 1800s, when it began to decline due to factors such as increasing population density and railroad construction. In recent years, however, Maryville has experienced some resurgence thanks to its unique history and architecture.
