Maryville, Missouri is an unincorporated community in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 599 at the 2010 census. The area that is now Maryville was first settled by French Canadian farmers in the early 1800s. In 1825, General James Wilkinson founded a post office here and named it after his wife, Mary. By 1830, most of the original settlers had moved away and only a few scattered families remained hereabouts. In 1836, John Sweeny started renting land near present-day Maryville from Captain Nathanial Smith for $1 per acre (or three dollars per year). This led to what later became known as Sweeny's Land Purchase. On July 3rd of that year, he sold the land to Lorenzo Alcorn and Samuel Fenton for $5 per acre (or twenty dollars per year). The town of Maryville began to form when these pioneers purchased their initial piece of property. A Methodist church was built in 1847 by Rev. Latham on land donated by Drury Lane Baptist Church member Solomon Hinesbaugh Jr.. A new schoolhouse replaced this building in 1865 and served as the town's primary school until 1907 when it was replaced by a larger school building also donated by Hinesbaugh. A post office called Maryville was established in 1872, and continued operation until it closed in 1909. At this time, the community housed only a small number of residents; most goods transported into and out of town were carried on horseback or wagon trains overland through Carbondale Junction across the Ohio River then downriver to Springfield or Cairo before being delivered via boat or riverboat back into town Common during those days before railroad travel became common! Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant ordered the Battle of Maryville which resulted in an American victory over Confederate forces. After the war ended in 1865, many of the original settlers moved away while others continued to live in Maryville until it became an incorporated city in 1902. Today, Maryville is home to several businesses including a hospital and multiple schools which continue to provide education opportunities for its citizens.
