A tavern called "New Beginnings" operated as a local inn until it closed around 1865 or so due to lack of customers. During the late 19th century several mills were built within walking distance of each other around city limits; however most stopped operations by 1920 because of competition from more efficient machines found farther away. Postmaster General John Fenton declared a state of emergency for Johnson County on May 23, 1889 due to an increase in crime rates which he blamed on opioids being distributed from surrounding states over open market prices as well as organized crime rings operating out of St Louis and Kansas City In 1923 local citizens staged a peaceful protest against price gouging by Joplin merchants during Spring Fair season when goods were sold for exorbitant prices without any discounts available; this led to the establishment of the Missouri Department of Commerce and Industry (MDCI) which helped promote trade within the state while regulating business practices throughout much of Missouri In 1932 local citizens successfully petitioned for incorporation into their own town following years of planning with support from then-Mayor Carlton Ewing On July 1, 1949 ExxonMobil announced plans to build its corporate headquarters adjacent to Old Mount Zion cotton plantation whereupon community leaders immediately started efforts to rename their new borough "ExxonMobil Maryville." However after some initial opposition community members later decided that they would rather keep their current name since many had maiden names beginning with Meville or other similar prefixes . On November 12, 1955 ExxonMobil Corporation merged with Mobil Oil Company forming what is now known as ExxonMobil Incorporated . At this point Mayor Carlton Ewing stepped down from his role effective December 31st after 44 years service
