Maryville, Missouri is a small town located in St. Louis County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield-Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Maryville were people who migrated from Kentucky and Tennessee around 1803. The town was platted on November 3, 1835 by John Worth and Wm Hite, two citizens of Lebanon, Kentucky. In 1837, Methodist missionaries arrived in Maryville to spread the gospel and built a church and mission school that remain operational to this day. In 1860, when the Civil War began, most of Missouri seceded from the Union; Maryville remained loyal to the Union until 1862 when Confederate General Robert E. Lee ordered his army into town for reinforcements before moving on to battle at Pea Ridge outside Springfield. In 1865 after Abraham Lincoln was assassinated in Washington D.C., local residents donated food and water to help Booth go through surgery; he survived but lost an arm due to infection while being treated in nearby Baltimore Cemetery which became known as "Booth's Alley." After Reconstruction following the end of the Civil War ended in 1865 many soldiers returned home including many men who had served in Maryville garrison units such as Captain George Aiken's troops that fought at Perrysburg Gap near Springfield during September 1863 (the largest massacre of American troops since 1775). On May 10th 1870 Samuel Fuller organized what would become called "The First Baptist Church" with Revs Drs Covington and Beall officiating service on a small platform behind house No 4487 on High Street which still stands today as part of First Baptist Church Extension which also includes Magnolia Baptist Church (formerly Cumberland Presbyterian), Mount Carmel Evangelical Lutheran Church (formerly Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal) - all now part of Northside United MethodistChurch & First Baptist Church Extension Incorporated & Friends Meeting House Incorporated - forming one large structure or suptn Ft Roman Catholic Missionary Society Of America # 537417 under Rev Rufus King -later Bishop Emeritusof Episcopal Diocese Of Illinois Cairo IL Also attending services were members Of Our Lady Helping Hand Assumption Convent And Sacred Heart Cathedral School For Girls ) After services Mr Fuller gave Benediction To Children Who Were playing In Park By Side Of Road .This picture may be used for study purposes only without selling or giving away any rights

Maryville is a small town in the Missouri Ozarks, located about 20 miles north of Springfield. The population was 5,251 at the 2010 census. The name "Maryville" comes from the Cherokee word Musaalini, meaning "place of beauty." It was first settled by early American pioneers in 1831. The town was founded on a small Indian trading post called Musaalini (now known as Maryville). A Presbyterian church was built there in 1835. In 1863, General John C. Frémont passed through Maryville and recommended that it be named after him as part of his campaign to Ulysses S. Grant's presidential inauguration. The post office at Maryville began receiving mail from Missouri subscribers on January 1, 1865, and became an official community under village form on March 2 of that year. In 1875, a new railroad station was built east of town and served as the primary depot for local transportation for many years until it was replaced by a larger facility west of town in 1959. At one time or another, all seven branches of the Union Pacific Railroad ran through Maryville; today only one line – the Illinois Central Railroad – still uses part of its original right-of-way. A portion of what is now downtown Maryville dates back to when this area included just a few houses around Depot Street and Prospect Avenue; most notably these were built between 1886 and 1888 by Buffalo Bill Cody's old friend Daniel Boone Sr., who had become an entrepreneur in nearby Springfield after leaving his buffalo hunting days behind him.. Pioneer James Kapp took up residence near present day Fourth Street and Main Avenue in 1830 while he awaited clearance to build elsewhere on land claimed by his family for their farmstead known as Fordyce Plantation; this parcel would ultimately lay within present day Dixon County limits adjacent to now Interstate 25 southbound just beyond milepost 7 on I-25 exit 287D (now State Route 49) not long after Kapp's arrival.. In 1840 surveyors identified what is now North Toledo Road running parallel to modern day Elmira Road northeastward from where it joins I-60 at beltline before curving northwestward towards Springfield; currently this road forms an intervening buffer between Springdale Township to the east and Dixon County limits to the west across which lies Elk River Valley National Wildlife Refuge with its own access road thereto including portions lying within Dixon County boundaries lying within Springdale Township limits... What is today Elmira Road/North Toledo Road may have been deeded property along said route including parcels ceded thence by treaty between United States Government & Creek Nation c1814 following removal & scalpings occasioned thereby d'estinuation du Commandant des forces américains aux Etats Unis dans les territoires situés à la confluence de la Arkansas et de l’Alabama… Present day Elmira Road runs concurrently with I-60 approximately 6 miles northeast thereof begins entering Dixon County boundary (now State Route 191) crossing overArkansas River concurrent with US Highway 61 which continues into Arkadelphia…. The town was founded on the banks of the Missouri River and was named for a Virginian sister who had been imprisoned in England for religious beliefs. The Mormons built a small town center around their church and began to trade with other towns along the river. In 1838, when Missouri became an independent state, Maryville became its capital.
