Maryville, Missouri is a town in the Ozarks of north-central Missouri, United States. The population was 10,027 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield–Springfield, MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now Maryville was John Stephenson in 1810. Stephenson founded a small community named North Carolina on his land east of present-day Maryville. He sold his land to other settlers and it became known as Stephenson's Valley because of this. A post office called Stephensville was established in 1828 and remained in operation until 1865. The first school in what is now Maryville was built by Ann Whitefield in 1827 on her farm northeast of present-day town. In 1829, Rev. James Rush assigned teacher Isaac Goodsell to teach upriver from Henryetta on the Arkansas River near present day Springfield to help build a new school for students from around Springfield Township (now Columbia County). The first building used for school purposes was a log cabin that stood near where First Methodist Church now stands on Third Street south of downtown Maryville In 1830, Mrsur Gentry donated land east ofpresent-day town to establish a Female Seminary which became known as "Gentry's Female Seminary". That year also saw the founding of the Illinois & Mississippi Canal Company with Captain James Purdy as its president and David Lane as its secretary/treasurer After years of negotiation and hard work by many people including Judge Nathaniel Lyon (the namesake of Lyon Park), General Samuel Jafari approved an act authorizingMissouri Territory Governor John Page to sell 3,000 acres (1 km2) lying within what is now Boone County upstream from Hickory Pointe Creek for $5 million payable over ten years The original purchase price included 800 acres (30 ha) for future development adjacent to Hickory Pointe Creek but no property has been developed since that time This event marks one possible reason why Hickory Pointe Creek remains unoccupied today despite being located only 6 miles (9 km) downstream from Maryville proper . It should be noted that when Missourian Territory Governor George Catlett arrived at Hickory Pointe Creek he discovered no sign whatsoever that anyone had been developing or purchasing any land thereabouts! There must have been some other motivates behind Catlett’s decision not to pursue development thereat . Perhaps he knew that such endeavors would never amount to anything given Stonington’s current location? Whatever the case may be, Hickory Pointe Creek deserves more attention than it currently receives! Governor Page issued another Act authorizing Colonel Elijah Maynard (& Captains Levi Coffin & Job Tillison)to purchase 4,000 additional acres downstream from Hickory Pointe Creek at an additional cost $6 million payable over ten years . This Act marked perhaps oneof History's most infamous purchases because it essentially doubled Missouri's current territory size ! Although this area never saw any significant development due primarily to problems associated with obtaining title deeds and financing etc., it still merits further study given how important transportation infrastructure might have been created if this tract had been developed back then !! Additionally President Abraham Lincoln visited Boone County during his stay there between February 15th - April 7th 1865 while attending operations at Fort Donelson opposite Memphis TN .....Afternoon sessions were held at Ford’s Plantation adjacent thereto ....Lincoln impressed upon those gathered therethe need for more troops stationed nearer home especially after Vicksburg had fallen .....It can be safely said that much progress has sincebeen made regarding soldiers being stationed nearer home however much work still needs To Be Done ...... Today's Maryville started out lifetiny little Settlement about 12x12 feet lots sizes varied 2 3/4 Acres each consisting mostly timbered Siding mud brick Frame House 25 feet high x 20 feet wide single story gable roofed barn 30 feet long side door 1 1/2 stories deep side window 8 inches high yoked with 2 posts 16 inches apart west end chimney nighstele
