Maryville, Missouri is a city in Clay County, Missouri, United States. The population was 6,824 at the 2010 census. The city was founded on November 3, 1876 by J. L. Wadsworth and others as a small town named for Maryellis (the name of a girl who helped Wadsworth find land for his farm). On October 15, 1882, the first school opened in Maryville and it served as the primary school until 1907 when it became part of local high school. In 1916–17 the city built its first hospital which became known as Regional Health Center South before being renamed St Joseph's Hospital in 1969.
