Ammunition production began in 1825 at a local blacksmith shop and continued until 1865, when it all stopped due to prohibition. In 1828, John Deere started manufacturing firearms in nearby Springfield, Missouri. This led to the development of trade between Springfield and Maryville. By 1830, saltpeter had become an important ingredient in ammunition because it could not be produced locally. In 1832, one-third of the world's supply of saltpeter was located in Springfield. As gunpowder became less available, artillerymen turned to new munitions including shot shells and mortars. Ammunition production resumed after Indian Wars (1865-1868) as prices for primary ingredients decreased and new technology developed such as vulcanized rubber bullets. Ammunition production reached its peak during World War I with over 1 million rounds being produced; however this ended with the war due to restrictions on ammunition production from Congress. After World War I ended, ammo production slowlyrose throughout the 1920s until1939 when Prohibition returned control of ammoproductiontotheUnited States government which instituted strict quality controls that continue today

Maryville is a city in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 3,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. The city was founded in 1859 by Captain James Wray and his family as a small village on the line of present-day Maryville Road and State Route 9. In 1861, General Ethan Allen's Union army passed through Maryville on its way to Egypt, and General Grant stopped there to rest for the night on July 10th, 1861. In 1865, during the American Civil War, Confederate forces burned down several buildings in town which caused great damage to both businesses and homes. The post office was established at Maryville in 1859; it was discontinued in 1907. Captain James Wray became one of the first settlers of what would become Maryville when he arrived with his family from Kentucky in 1859. He founded a trading post at what is now known as Wray's Mills (now an agricultural community), about three miles north of present-day Maryville Road and State Route 9A (later US 36). The first store opened here on December 12th, 1859; it lasted until 1860 when it closed because of Indian raids that took place near town boundaries then and again over the next few years. A store operated here continuously until 1862 when stores wereestablished farther south along present-day US 36 between Independence Avenue and I-435 exit #2A (the current site of Midtown mall). Maryville, Missouri is a town in Pulaski County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,591 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Pulaski County. The townsite was laid out by George H. Smith in 1836 and named for General James K. Polk. The community began to grow rapidly after it became the county seat in 1868; by 1890, Maryville had a population of 3,419 people. In 1904, a post office was established in Maryville; it remained operational until 1907. In 1912, an act to establish a state school system at Maryville were passed by the General Assembly; the first state-operated school opened its doors on September 15th of that year. The town quickly became known as "the Alma Mater of Illinois". In 1916–17, Maryville became part of the Kansas City Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA). As Kansas City's largest city expanded westward during World War II and into new neighborhoods east of I-435 (known then as "I-435 Corridor"), Maryville slowly lost its status as an agricultural center due to increased commuting and industry in neighboring cities and towns. However, many residents still lived close to their farms throughout the war years because there were no other opportunities for work outside farming or ranching after President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation ended slavery in 1865.
