Maryville is a small town in the state of Missouri, United States. The population was 1,533 at the 2010 census. It is part of Saline County. The area around Maryville was first settled by English colonists in 1764. In 1837, the town was organized as a village and became a city in 1907. The current name of the city comes from her ancestor, Rev. John Berry (1763-1836). The history of Maryville goes back to pre-Columbian times when Native Americans lived hereabouts. Arthur Stoneman discovered gold near present day Maryville on October 20, 1859 while prospecting for silver mines near Fenton. As soon as news of this discovery spread through Missouri and Illinois, men from those states flocked to encourage American miners to seek riches beyond their traditional boundaries! In 1865 Major General George Armstrong Custer landed his cavalry at nearby Smith’s Landing on the Arkansas River after leading them against Confederate forces during the Battle of Cedar Creek; many people believe that this event helped spur development along what is now State Route 508 east of town – today’s Boulevard – which Custer called “the golden trail” because so much gold had been found there! At its peak in 1860, Maryville had an estimated population of 2,500 residents and boasted five churches and two schools; however by 1870 it had only 300 residents and no school! Despite these challenges, over time trade with surrounding communities grew steadily; gaslights were brought into town from Hannibal in 1881; first streetcar service began between Maryville and Saline City in 1888 (!); soap manufacturing commenced operations here in 1903; brickmaking followed shortly thereafter starting with one Factory building erected on Main Street (now Goudy Street) just south of town square – note: this factory later burned down). This growth did not stop however as several other businesses opened up over time including grocery stores (1911), clothing stores (1920), shoe stores (1930), furniture stores (1940) and finally cellular phone providers beginning services here in 1968 (!). All these businesses generated significant jobs within our community as well as providing economic stability during tough times - something which has continued to be true throughout recent years! Today we continue to thrive due to our local government commitment to quality education opportunities for all citizens – currently ten high school students attend Our Lady Of Mount Carmel High School while six more are attending Gateway Community College/Maryville University which offers various undergraduate programs leading up to graduate degrees such as law enforcement or marketing!
