However some continue to live here through family ties or because they feel it's their home town

The first white settlers in what is now Maryland Heights, Missouri were James and Sally K. Caldwell, who arrived in 1814. The next year, the Kents sold their land to Colonel George Armstrong Clark and his family for $10 per acre. In 1837, the Clarks built the first school on their property. In 1851, General John C. Frémont founded the Missouri Central Railroad and laid track from Cairo to Independence on Maryland Heights. The railroad helped bring people and goods to Independence and Baltimore, which made it a hub for trade in the early 1800s. In 1865, during the American Civil War, Confederate forces occupied Maryland Heights. After Union troops arrived to help protect civilians living in the area, Confederate forces withdrew. In 1870, an oil well was drilled on Maryland Heights and production began that continues to this day. By 1880, there were over 100 businesses operating in Independence and nearby Baltimore with a workforce of over 1,000 people employed directly or indirectly by those businesses. During prohibition era (1920-1934), many business owners refused to sell alcohol because it was seen as illegal under state law. However, due to strong demand from customers who could not get liquor anywhere else available at that time, most of these businesses eventually closed down during prohibition however some continued operations until 1933 when Prohibition ended nationwide
