The first permanent settler in what is now Maryland Heights, Missouri was James McGill who arrived in 1840. The area would become a popular place to grow corn, beans and other crops, due to the fertile soil and mild climate. By 1855, the population of Maryland Heights had reached 2,000 people. In 1865, Union General Ulysses S. Grant moved his army from Springfield northward through Maryland Heights and enters the city limits through a small gate located at Virginia Avenue. The area around present-day Maryland Heights was originally part of Springfield Township on the north side of I-435 between St Louis County Road 9 and Cumberland Valley Road. On November 1, 1871, it became part of Johnson County when it was created from parts of both counties. The original town site included most of what is now MDH’s east side from Prince George Drive south to Illinois Avenue; much of its west side including some properties on Carter Lane were later annexed by MDH as well. In 1892, local residents voted to incorporate as a village under the name "Maryland Heights." After more than two years of wrangling over which name should be given to their new community – "Highlands" or "Montgomery" – officials settled on "Maryland Heights" because it sounded more like home than either Highlands or Montgomery (the namesakes for nearby cities). The first mayor was Wm Hennessey and the first clerk was John Aiken. On July 4th 1907 a fire destroyed all but four homes in what is now MDH's east side; however no one was hurt and all reconstruction began immediately with help from donations from residents across town. One year later on September 8th 1908 another fire destroyed most of what is now MDH's west side; again there were no injuries but rebuilding took longer due to lack of funds then ever before due to an economy that had been changing rapidly since World War I had ended six months earlier! This happened during an era where many people felt they could not afford rebuild even if they wanted too because property values had quadrupled since 1907! In 1916 voters approved annexation into Johnson County so thatMDH could have access to better public transportation while still having its own governing body which would make decisions about important aspects such as zoning instead of being run by county commissioners who often didn't have experience with housing or development issues! During World War II (1939 - 1945), huge amounts of munitions were produced in Mdh including tanks and planes used in Operation Overlord which led directlyto WWII casualties among those living within striking distance! This also caused immense damage both physically & emotionally as families lost everything they owned in flames & destruction!
