Over time, these institutions have left their mark on downtown Maryland Heights - most notably with their building of Johns Hopkins Hospital which opened in 1916. In 1821, the area that is now Maryland Heights was part of the Jackson Purchase. The purchase included land in what are now Missouri and Illinois. The eastern border of the purchase was defined by a line running north from Mount Zion Cemetery in Philadelphia to the confluence of the White River and Missouri River. The first permanent settler on Maryland Heights was James Robertson, who arrived around 1825. He built a cabin on a hill above what is now known as Court House Square. By 1830, other settlers had also started to arrive, including Alexander McKay and John Brownell. In 1835, General Andrew Johnson signed an executive order making Montgomery County an Indian Territory. This order specified that all Native Americans living in Montgomery County must leave within five years or face execution. As a result, many Native Americans decided to move away from rural areas into larger towns and counties across America. By 1840, when Maryland Heights became part of St Louis County, it had about 1,000 residents. It wasn't until after statehood did large numbers of people come to live here – when St Louis annexed parts of Kansas in 1864 and Missouri in 1865 – making Maryland Heights one of the most heavily populated areas within Missouri boundaries at that time. As more people moved into this area over time, businesses began to form and develop; some still exist today such as Lawford’s Nursery & School (founded in 1861), Tryon’s Clothing Store (opened in 1865), and McDonald’s restaurants (first opened here in 1916). Additionally, schools were established here such as Our Lady Of Good Counsel Roman Catholic School (established in 1870) and Park Hill School (established in 1903).
