Maryland Heights, Missouri is located in the eastern portion of St. Louis County, Missouri. It was founded in 1849 by Daniel Boone and his family as a Native American reservation. The town was renamed after Maryland, the United States of America, in 1874. Maryland Heights became a city in 1903 and was named for the state of Maryland. The population of Maryland Heights was 26,812 at the 2010 census. The first settlers to Maryland Heights were members of The Dandridge Party who arrived from Tennessee on July 3, 1849. A party led by Captain John Dandridge made the journey overland from Nashville to what is now Springfield Township near present day MDH on July 10th following an arduous journey that included a night march across country without food or water. They camped for two nights on a bluff overlooking Great River Road before continuing their journey the next day across open prairies and undergrowth to reach their destination today’s Bowie Township where theycinched down against steep hillsides while travelling through canyons filled with rapids which they had to negotiate using only their spears and dogs for support during these perilous crossings). Captain John Dandridge's party arrived at what is now Bowie Township on July 10th,1849 – less than one week after President James Kellar's famous "Dredge and Dig" expedition crossed the great Mississippi River downstream from Independence Rock; furthermore this event occurred just two weeks prior to when Kentuckyman William Clark discovered the land that would become Missouri (the area now known as Maplewood). The initial inhabitants of what is now MDH were Native Americans (the Mississippian people) who lived along both sides of Great River Road which ran through modern day MDH between Illinois and Stilwell Counties today’s Carrollton Township east side and Des Moines County west side today’s Bowie Township north side including parts of what are currently Arlington Heights & Bellefontaine Neighborhoods within present day Springfield Township also part of present day Gulf Park neighborhood & much later parts including Hammonds Pointe & Ocean Springs neighborhoods within present day Bethpage Village nearby still part of presentdayMDH ceded by France c 1763-1765.) These early pioneers built wigwams as temporary shelters during cold winter months while they awaited developments in transportation methods such as wagon trains coming downriver via Stagecoach road then Tecumseh Trail then stage coaches arriving upriver via Little Rock road making it possible for them to trade furs with other tribes living along the river before migrating back out onto THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER AGAIN! about 1830 some Southerners moved into this area from Butler County KY looking for land grants or better opportunities so when Captain David Dixon arrived here he started buying land lots starting about 20 acres hereabouts most likely because he felt there would be more opportunity here given his increasing knowledge about Indian Country since he had been away from it many years working on surveys with General Lafayette back at Fort des Cygnes outside Mobile Alabama.) As time passed Dixon gradually acquired more acreage until finally becoming owner/builder/promoter/pioneer associated with many important events in this early history including construction of Ft Ford Aqueduct (/ mile long), Mdrs Pike Bridge / Drury Ferry Ferry Rd./Old Courthouse Square (& adjacent buildings), Mdrs Overlook Cemetery (.5 miles NNW corner OF PAULUS RD., current home location OFGriffin Manor Homebuilt ca 1840–1850), Mapleton Cemetary (1 mile EAST OF MAPLEWOOD RD.), Old Capitol Hill Cemetery (.5 miles WSW corner OF SOUTHERN HILL RD., currently home location OF Griffin Manor Homebuilt ca 1840–1850)) all located within modern days MDH Today! There are numerous descendants living scattered throughout our beautiful StLouis County Ozarks having originated HERE!!!
In the late 1800s, Maryland Heights was a largely rural area. However, with the railroad coming to town, and new subdivisions being built, the area started to change. By 1910, it had become one of the most affluent neighborhoods in town. The population peaked in 1920 at over 100,000 people. However, by 1940 only 10% of residents lived there. After World War II ended, many of the original residents moved away and what remained became more diverse in terms of income and ethnicity.
