In 1911, the Maryland Heights Police Department was organized into a departmental force under the command of Sheriff John Fenton. In 1938, a new ordinance became effective which regulated firearms and required all handgun owners to obtain a license from the city government before purchasing any handguns. This ordinance also banned "straw purchasers" from possessing pistols without having an owner's license or registration from the city. Beginning in 1945, handguns were again allowed for civilian purchase within city limits as part of an effort to reduce crime rates and protect citizens from becoming prey to violent criminals. In 1951, Mayor James Hickey passed an ordinance which allowed concealed carry of handguns on public property inside municipalities with a population over 5,000 residents. In 1975, Mayor Harry Buell founded the National Rifle Association (NRA) in order to promote gun rights throughout America and support NRA members who wanted to buy arms legally. That same year, Mayor Buell enacted an ordinance which restricted handgun sales within city limits to those who had an owner's license or registration from another municipality within their jurisdiction.
Maryland Heights, Missouri is a census-designated place in St. Louis County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield–St. Charles–Urbana Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was named after Maryland in England and it was first settled by Scots-Irish settlers in the 1840s. By 1860, most of the original Scots-Irish were gone and replaced by Germans from Germany who had emigrated to America since 1815. By 1870, nearly all of the German residents had died out except for a small number who kept moving into Maryland Heights until about 1920 when they also stopped settling there because of violence and economic difficulties in the area caused by World War I and Prohibition." In 1922, three families moved into what would become known as "The Hill" which overlooked downtown St. Louis from its location on Maryland Heights Boulevard just east of Illinois Road (now Interstate 64). They bought subdivisions around their house for $10 per acre each and named their subdivision "Maryland Heights". The name stuck because no one in that area ever left - even after it became part of St. Louis County in 1968! In recent years there have been efforts to change or update some aspects of this history such as changing how street numbers are assigned within Maryland Heights so that they match up with other parts of town but those efforts have not yet succeeded."

Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Maryland Heights, Missouri is one of the most significant cemeteries in the city. It was founded on August 24, 1881, and it has since been home to many notable people from both local and national backgrounds. The cemetery is also a popular tourist spot for visitors to explore its many gravesites and memorials. The cemetery was originally located on what is now Mount Pleasant Avenue. However, due to its location near Fordham University, the original cemetery had a large population of students who were buried there. Over time, the population of students decreased as more people moved into the area around Mount Pleasant Avenue. Eventually, the original graveyard became too small for all of the residents of Maryland Heights and they were forced to move their bodies to newer cemeteries such as Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in 1922. In addition to its importance as a local graveyard, Mt. Pleasant Cemetery has also been important in national history because it is where General James Kossuth was buried during his attempt to overthrow President Ulysses S Grant in 1876. Kossuth's body was not returned until after he died in 1886, which means that his remains are still at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery today!
The first white settler in what is now Missouri was John Fenton, who came to the area in 1831. He built a cabin on the edge of what is now Maryland Heights and named it Fort Fenton. The first store in what is now Missouri was opened at this site by J.H. Bemis in 1839. In 1841, Ft.Fenton became home to the county seat of St. Francois County when that territory was created from part of Jackson County. In 1865, the Union army burned down FortFenton as part of an effort to remove all Confederate forces from the state. The fort had been used as a storage depot for military supplies and munitions during the warring states period and also served as a hospital for Confederate soldiers and their families after the war ended. The reconstructed fort has been open to visitors since 1975. In 1870, James Haggerty set up a trading post on land he had purchased near present-day Pepinville in St Francois County. This post functioned as a commercial center for much of eastern Missouri until it closed its doors around 1880 due to lack of customers or competition from larger stores located farther west or east across the state line at Rolla or Columbia (the two original counties within Missouri). The following year, territorial Governor John Pemberton ordered Surveyor General George Sibley to begin compiling a map of present-day Missouri based on survey reports filed with his office by early settlers including Fenton, Haggerty, and others; this map would become known as "Sibley's Map". After months of work, Sibley released his report – which depicted only portions of present-day Kansas – on October 6, 1881; this event marked endowingpresent-day St Francois Count
