The first settler to arrive in what is now Maryland Heights was John Chilton, who arrived in 1836. He built a log cabin on the east bank of the Verdigris River. By 1840, however, he had moved his family to a more permanent home on the west bank of the river. That year, he and his family acquired 640 acres (248 ha) of land lying north and northeast of present-day Maryland Heights. This land became known as Chilton's Valley or Chilton's Rancho because it belonged to Judge James Goudreau who owned much of eastern Missouri at that time. In 1846, George Washington Carver came to live in Maryland Heights for about two years while he attended Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky. Carver was then working as a tutor for students at Transylvania when he decided to move westward into Kansas Territory where he began work on a plantation called "Carver's Grove." In 1850, Carver left Kansas Territory and returned to Missouri but never completed his plantation which remain extant today as one of Missouri's most notable landmarks and contains several carriages used by dignitaries during state occasions such as funerals and weddings

The land that makes up present-day Maryland Heights was purchased from the federal government by businessmen James A. heart and brothers Daniel and John Tilton in 1954 for $6 million dollars.
