While that move did not cause significant economic impact on Maryland Heights due toBaltimore being much closer to most students, it did create some tension between Hopkins faculty and students which may have led to increased competition between these two institutions for students' dollars and time

The area that is now Maryland Heights was part of the Shawnee Nation and was not opened to white settlement until 1830. The first house on the current site of Maryland Heights was built by George Washington Wilkinson in 1837. In 1845, when St. Louis became an independent republic, Missouri became a state within the new republic. The name for the community at this time was "Bellevue." In 1861, when Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House, Bellevue came under Union control and became known as "Springfield." The population of Springfield increased rapidly during the American Civil War due to the influx of soldiers and their families. On April 14, 1865, Union General Ulysses S. Grant ordered all Confederate forces to surrender at Springfield because they could no longer maintain resistance against overwhelming Union forces
