Despite these challenges–most notably high housing prices that have made it difficult for most families to afford a home in MDH –the city has continued To thrive despite some tough times over the years such as financial assistance from MOVE (Montreal Opportunities for Economic Development) which helped attract major businesses such as Googleplex Midwest headquarters beforeStLouisCounty lost its status as an economic driver. In 1821, the area that is now Maryland Heights was part of the Shawnee Indian Reservation. The first white settler in what is now Maryland Heights was James McGillivray, who purchased land in 1786. In 1830, a group of Scots-Irish settlers arrived and began to cultivation crops and build homes. By 1840, most of the Scots-Irish had moved away from the area because of religious reasons. This period in Maryland Heights's history are marked by tension between Native Americans and European settlers over control of resources such as land and water. The Missouri Compromise (1820), which ended slavery in Missouri, helped spur development in this region. The Compromise provided for a measure called the Kansas–Nebraska Act (1854), which allowed Kansas Territory to be divided into two parts: one part would be ruled by Mexico, while the other would be ruled by United States citizens. This allowed for more people to move into this territory because it offered easy access to farmland. The growth of industry in nearby St Louis led to increased demand for housing and jobs on both sides of the river; results have been seen ever since with an increase in population density along I-70 corridor east of St Louis
