Because it was located so close to St Louis – one of America’s most important cities – development quickly took off at Maryland Heights. By 1830, businesses had been established along three main streets: Market Street (now Independence Avenue), G Street (now Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard), and High Street (now Euclid Avenue). Additionally, two churches – First Presbyterian Church on G Street and Second Baptist Church on High Street – were built within a few years of each other. By 1860, there were over 1,500 residents living in Baltimore City limits when Congress designated land straddling both sides of the Allegheny River as part of Missouri for settlement by freed slavesitent Masons under General James Kountz’s supervision as part of President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation announced January 1st that year decreeing all slaveholders must give up their slaves within seven days or face violence or economic hardship from their owners). On November 1st following passage into law by Ulysses S Grant that provided for white men between 21 years old and 60 years old who owned no slaves to own property within Kansas Territory to purchase any Negro freehold real estate including but not limited to: tracts lying eastwardly.. these men elected John Pemberton as Mayoralty
The first human settlement in the area that is now Maryland Heights was made by the Potomac River tribe of Native Americans in the late 18th century. The town was founded on a site which is now near present-day Midtown Kansas City, Missouri. The town name came from a small hill that overlooked the river where settlers met to trade goods and discuss new land opportunities. The first post office was established in 1796, and by 1800, there were over 100 residents living in Maryland Heights. In 1819, the town became part of St. Louis County when it was created from parts of Missouri and Arkansas. In 1837, a Methodist church was built in Maryland Heights and became one of the most popular churches in St. Louis County. A fire destroyed much of the town around 1840, but it re-emerged as a thriving community with several stores, schools, churches and homes until 1865 when it all fell apart due to civil war fever outbreaks throughout Saint Louis County. In 1865, Union General Ulysses S Grant decided to move his army westward across Missouri into neighboring Kansas City so he could besieged Santa Anna’s forces at Pea Ridge Battlefield outside Kansas City during what would be known as The Great War for America (1861-1865). As General Grant's army moved forward through southeastern Missouri they passed through Maryland Heights on their way to Pea Ridge Battlefield where they were met with fierce resistance by Confederate General Robert Ewing's army led by Governor James Kansan (of Kansas City), who had ordered military support for Santa Anna should he fall back against Union advances. As Confederate troops fought off US cavalry attempting to flank them at Maryland Heights they began field artillery bombardment which caused serious losses among US soldiers who were trapped between Confederate lines and heavy firepower from Confederate artillery located atop hills nearby including Prince George’s County hills today called Surrounding Hilltops watching events unfold from high up). At about 4 pm on July 6 1861 Lieutenant Colonel John Cordon distinguished himself leading an attack against Confederate positions at Surrounding Hilltops after raiding enemy camps nearby while scouting ahead for Grant's advancing column; this event is commonly cited as start of Battle of MdH heights By 5 pm almost all Union troops had been killed or wounded within minutes resultant surrender offerred by Kansan without fighting A plaque commemorates this fateful day located at Nedlands Elementary School today
