The Confederates were able to build a strong defenses around the city, but on November 17, Grant's army finally attacked. After days of fighting, Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House in Virginia. For this victory, Grant was awarded the Medal of Honor and Lincoln was assassinated two months later.

This event is generally accepted as the beginning of the end for slavery in America. The proclamation also announced that all slaveholders were to be expelled from Missouri within 10 days or face military violence and seizure of their property. The men who had come overland to start new lives down south became known as the "Moses Boys." These early settlers had an important role in shaping Missouri history because they are responsible for creating many key landmarks and memories including: Stoney Creek Bridge (1827), Independence Hall (1829), and Maryville Cemetery (1839).
The area that is now Maryland Heights, Missouri was first settled in the 1820s by Scots-Irish immigrants. The town of McConnellsville was founded in 1830 and quickly became a thriving community with a large population of farmers and their families. By 1840, the population had increased to around 1,000 people and McConnellsville began to become known as a center for trade and commerce. In 1847, the town passed an ordinance establishing a school system and becoming the second town in Missouri to do so. The town's growth continued through the 1850s and 1860s, thanks in part to its position as a major transportation hub on the Missouri River. By 1870, McConnellsville had become an important commercial center with a population of over 5,000 people. However, during the American Civil War (1861-1865), McConnellsburg was severely damaged by Confederate artillery fire. As a result of this damage, many residents fled northward into Maryland Heights until it became safe for them to return in 1865.
