The town also developed a commercial area, which included a canal that ran through it. In 1836, Maryland Heights had a population of 1,300 people and an economy based largely on agriculture and manufacturing. In 1865, the Union Army burned down part of what is now downtown Maryland Heights during the Battle of Gettysburg. After the war, local businesses began to reopen and grow again as soldiers returned home from battle. By 1880, violence had once again become an issue in the town; three men were killed and eleven were injured when someone threw a rock at a white man who had stopped to help them with their horse. In 1892, President Grover Cleveland purchased land adjacent to what is now Interstate 435 near Maryland Heights for use as a national park; this made Maryland Heights one of America's earliest national parks. Today, much of what once comprised downtown Md Heights has been preserved as an historic district known as "The Old Town."
The first permanent settler in Maryland Heights was John Childs, who arrived in 1786. He and his family built a house on the current site of St. Louis University. The area became a popular shopping center for farmers and other residents of the area during the early 1800s. In 1837, General James K. Polk founded Fort Myer on land that he purchased from Lord Baltimore for $10,000. The fort served as a military post until 1861, when it was surrendered to Confederate forces. It is now part of Washington University in St. Louis (WUSL). During World War II, Maryland Heights played an important role as an airfield for training United StatesAAF pilots and Allied fighter pilots preparing for combat against Nazi Germany. The airfield was used until 1945 by the RAF Ninth Air Force flying Spitfires and Hurricanes from RAF Northolt, England between 1941-1945. In 1954, Missouri statehood occurred and portions of Johnson County were carved out of Warren County to form Missouri’s first congressional district which included parts of what is now Maryland Heights – including much of what is now Highland Park – as well as adjacent areas around Ferguson Avenue in Ferguson Township and White Rock Springs in White Rock Springs Township. There have been no major changes to this district since its creation over seventy years ago!
