In 1837, a group of Missouri farmers decided to move from their home in eastern Kentucky to the area now known as Maryland Heights. The community was named for General James K. Polk, who had been U.S. President at the time and was then living in exile in France. The first settlers were all men, and they built their homes using logs that they collected from around the area. They soon realized that there was no timber available near them, so they began to search for other sources of income. In 1840, one of the settlers, John Fenton, started a small grocery business in what is now called Fenton Plaza. From this business, he became one of the town's most successful businessmen and helped make Maryland Heights one of the most prosperous communities on the east side of St Louis County. The community slowly grew over time, and by 1868 it had a population of about 200 people. By 1900 it had expanded to include many more businesses and families. After World War II ended in 1945, Maryland Heights experienced a period of growth that continued until it reached its current size today. One reason for this growth has been its location close to downtown St Louis; since 1965 it has been home to two large shopping malls – Ballpark Village and Lambert Park Mall – as well as several other high-end retailers and restaurants
