After the war ended, the club continued to serve as a resource for local residents and businesses until it folded in 1978. In 1907, when Columbia University moved from its original location on State Street between Randolph and Kostner avenues to present-day Union Station, it donated land for a new campus on which it built two large dormitories – one for undergraduate students and one for graduate students – as well as three smaller buildings intended primarily for classrooms, laboratories, storage space, and athletics facilities. The university also bought land across State streets from Columbia University School of Dentistry to create medical immunity greenfield Campus 2 adjacent to the existing single-story brickbuilding that served as home to Drs. James Cushing (1837-1912), John Harkness (1849-1921), Charles Loyd Thomson (1859-1936), Edwin Sanger (1868-1948), Lewis Strauss (1874-1945), Julius Rosenwald (1881-1964). In 1871, the first railroad reached Maryland Heights. The line was called the Kansas Pacific Railroad and connected St. Louis with Omaha, Nebraska. After a few years of service, the company went bankrupt and never reopened. In 1875, Missourians voted to annex what is now Jefferson County into their state; as a result, Maryland Heights became part of Missouri. The first extractive coal mine on the property was opened in 1896 by J.P. Morgan & Co., one of the largest coal companies in America at that time. It soon proved impossible to produce enough coal to make money from it, so it closed down in 1904. However, there were other businesses that thrived during this time: A millinery shop operated until 1907 and later became a clothing factory; an ice cream parlor dated back to 1922; and a grocery store (now closed) served residents until 1929 when it was replaced by another housing development called "Commerce". After World War II ended in 1945, military bases started being constructed all over Missouri – including one on Maryland Heights – and many jobs were created for soldiers returning home from overseas deployments. However, after several decades of growth and constant renovation efforts by developers not interested in keeping up with changing times (and also because much of what had once been valuable land had been developed for housing), most of the original buildings on Maryland Heights were lost or abandoned during the 1960s through 1970s as demand for homes outpaced ability to build new ones.
