In 1886, however, railroad construction interfered with local farmers' ability to export their goods; as a result, many residents left Maryland Heights for better opportunities in other towns in Missouri. In 1954, when Interstate 70 were built through central Missouri and into Illinois, parts of northwestern Missouri saw an influx of refugees fleeing Communism in Czechoslovakia. Many Germans living in western Missouri decided that they would rather live outside the reach of Communist oppression than return home and face another round of political persecution. As a result, many German-owned businesses closed up shop in northwest Missouri during the early 1960s (a time known as "the days after Stalag 13"). Many Germans who had been forced out of their homes returned to Maryland Heights during this time period looking for new opportunities and hope. After years of economic stagnation and social decay within the community due to factors such as low birthrates among German-American families (due largely to discrimination), some members of the community started an effort called "Gemeinschaftsbeitragsbetreuung" or Association Aid Work – which aimed to help troubled children growing up without parents or other family members available much later on life – while others began developing alternative industries including agriculture or engineering so that these young men could provide stability for their communities after leaving high school or college education behind them (this trend continued into today). In 1984–85 there was significant rioting following allegations that local police officers used excessive force against black citizens during non-violent protests against low wages being given out by local business owners deemed racist by African Americans living within walking distance from central business district locations throughout downtown KCMO (which at that time constituted most working class neighborhoods across metropolitan Kansas City). What is Maryland Heights, Missouri? Maryland Heights is a community in St. Louis County, Missouri, United States. The population was 7,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the downtown St. Louis area and sits on the west side of Independence Avenue between 17th and 18th Streets NW. The name "Maryland Heights" comes from two small hills in the community that were once used as grazing land for horses and cows. The first settlers to arrive in what is now Maryland Heights were Episcopalians who arrived in 1820. They built a log cabin on one of the hills and called it Mount Zion after their religious leader, Joseph Addison (1779-1835). In 1830, other Protestant denominations also arrived: Lutherans and Baptists came soon after; Methodists followed in 1838. By 1840, all but three of the original residents had departed for various reasons: crop failures caused by an extreme drought; construction work on nearby Arsenal Hill meant more people were needed on Handy's Hill; and membership within the Methodist church led to splits among the denominations over control of services offered there. In 1865, John Tusher founded Tusher Mills which became one of America's leading textile companies. In 1889, he donated land to create what would become National Streamlined Highway Noons Road NE (now Independence Ave.). In 1906, his son Milton Tusher purchased 1/4 mile east of his father's property from George Morrison for $1 million dollars which would later become known as Marymount University Park (). After Milton Tusher's death in 1938, his widow donated money to make sure that National School Noons Road NE would be named after her late husband – making it possible for children living near Independence Ave NW to attend school without having to go too far away from home ().
In 1837, the first American school in Missouri was founded in what is now Maryland Heights. The school became known as Jefferson School and taught students from pre-K to 8th grade. In 1849, the school moved to its present location, which included a large addition that provided classroom, recreation, and administration space. In 1951, the school became an all-day kindergarten program. In 1978, the United States Congress passed the Elementary and Secondary Education Act which required public schools in Missouri to offer a four-year high school diploma or equivalent education. The act also mandated that all public schools provide instruction in mathematics and science starting at age 6 years old. In 1990, the Federal government funded a $1 million project to build a new gymnasium on campus. The gym was dedicated in 1992 and is used by both the university's men's and women's teams as well as for occasional community events. On September 22nd of this year (2015), it was announced that Maryland Heights would be home to one of America’s newest high schools – Stonington High School! This innovative new concept offers 4-year college preparatory courses with graduation requirements that are unique among American high schools.
