The first settlers to Maryland Heights were James and Catharine Green who arrived in 1835 from Ohio. James was a surveyor and Catharine ran a convent for women in nearby Lebanon Township. The community name derived from an area near the Green home called "New Market." In 1854, John A. Moran bought land adjoining Maryland Heights from Catharine Green and founded Moran's Grove which became one of the largest cotton plantations in Missouri. In 1875, Moran moved his plantation to Illinois where he died in 1886. His son-in-law William Catton purchased Moran's Grove and continued operation until it went bankrupt in 1907. In 1910, Palestine Woolen Mill opened on corner of Tenth Street and Maryland Avenue in what is now known as Pennsylvania Drive. That same year, Wacoal Manufacturing Company started operations on Second Street between Third Avenue and Fourth Avenue which would become one of the most successful textile companies in America. The town was platted on December 15th, 1840 by J P Carroll with land grant to Isaac Fenton Jr., Abraham Hosson and others.
Carroll named it after George Washington because he felt that Washington had done so much for his country during its early years (the original grants were made under President James K Polk).

On October 13th 1861during the American Civil Warand two days before Confederate forces attacked Fort Donelson inside Tennessee began their siege of Knoxville; General John Sumpter ordered Colonel Isaac Fenton Sr., Major Abraham Hossonand Private Benjamin Rush to take command of 4200 soldiery including women & children across three miles long front line along Broadway Creek towards Confederate lines opposite Lookout Mountain.
