In 1881, when German immigrants starting settling in Maryland Heights decided to name their community "Germantown," many people objected because there was no such place in Germany called Germantown. A town meeting was called to resolve this issue but nothing came of it. Eventually, some Germans found an old map of Germantown that showed two streets leading there: Prussian Street (now Market Street) and Swiss Avenue (now Naylor Road). So they named their community Germantown after Germantown Township in Pennsylvania where this map originated from. Eventually, many more Germans moved into Maryland Heights and started businesses such as grocery stores and breweries while others bought homes here. The population peaked at over 1,000 in 1914 but slowly began declining throughout the 1920s until it reached its current low levels today around 400 residents
