The first settler in what is now Maryland Heights was John Graves Simms who arrived with his family in 1820 from Ohio. The area that includes present day Maryland Heights was part of Colesville Township until 1827 when it became part of Dixon Township under territorial control after Louisiana seceded from Mexico. On November 1, 1837 Dixon merged with Montrose Township which had been created just two weeks earlier out of parts of Dixon and Williamson townships (along with Woodbury). The merging caused much anger among the local landowners who saw their land taken away without any compensation - something that continues to this daywig today's struggles between Mdheighborhoods' preservationists and developers over property values within each community
The first European to visit what is now Maryland Heights, Missouri was Captain James Cook in 1795. Cook named the area after the Heights of Baltimore, Maryland where he had been shipwrecked. The first permanent European settlers arrived in 1803 and built a log cabin on land that would later become known as Maryland Heights. The first school in what is now Maryland Heights was erected on this site in 1827. The present day elementary school was constructed on this site in 1906. A number of businesses were operated out of the original log cabin until it became too costly to maintain and operate the structure on its own. In 1916, a group of businessmen organized by Dr. Averill Harriman decided to construct an all-weather road from Columbia, Missouri to Springfield, Illinois which would connect with their other businesses throughout the Midwest. This new road became known as Harriman Boulevard and remains a main artery today for residents of Maryland Heights and surrounding neighborhoods
