Maryland Heights, Missouri is a small town in the St. Louis metropolitan area. It is located in western Missouri, about 20 miles south of downtown St. Louis and 10 miles east of the Missouri state line. The population was 5,887 at the 2000 census. According to the United States Census Bureau, Maryland Heights has a total area of 3 square miles (8 km²), all of it land. As one of just two towns in eastern Missouri (the other being Florissant) that are not part of the Springfield-Peoria Metropolitan Statistical Area, Maryland Heights experiences its own unique blend of Midwestern and Southern culture. Its residents are known for their honesty and hard work ethic, as well as their deep love for their home town and its people. The town's churches - Methodist, Baptist and Catholic - have been integral in helping to keep Maryland Heights alive over the years. The first settler in what would become Maryland Heights dates back to 1821 when James Moultrie bought 640 acres (246 ha) on which he built his home called "Moultrie Station." By 1870, there were more than 150 homes in what became known as "The Hill". In 1912, John Fenton purchased 1 acre (0.40 ha) from Moultrie for $1 and named it "Fenton Place". In 1922, he donated another 1 acre (0.40 ha) to the Methodist Episcopal Church for use as a graveyard; today this parcel forms part of the town square adjoining Main Street). In 1924 Nathaniel Myrick founded Myrick Machine Works on State Route 54A adjacent to his farmstead called "Myrick's Mills." At its peak production levels during World War II—when many northern manufacturers shifted their operations south because war effort demanded high quality machines quickly—Myrick Manufacturing produced more than 2 million parts for military vehicles worldwide! Today only a few pieces remain from those days: an old turreted truck now sits outside Main Street's former post office building; a remains an engine block from an old locomotive found nearby; and one doorjamb from an original farmhouse still stands within walking distance of Main Street

Maryland Heights is a small town in Missouri, located about 25 miles north of St. Louis. The population was 1,566 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Clay County and the home to I-70 and US-270. Maryland Heights was first settled in 1839 by German immigrants who arrived on the ship "Euphrates". The community was named for Prince George's County, Maryland, which then lay within Prince George's County. In 1864, when Union General Andrew Johnson became President of the United States, he ordered all military forces be disbanded except for those serving under him in South Carolina and Louisiana. As a result of this order, many soldiers who were stationed in Missouri left their units to return home. Among these soldiers were several hundred Germans who had been ordered to remain in Missouri as part of the 3rd Infantry Brigade under General John McClernand. Pennsylvania native John Edward Hughes had chosen to serve with McClernand’s brigade and took up residence in Maryland Heights after its arrival there from St. Louis on December 15, 1862. Hughes established himself as a farmer and began construction on what would become his family farmhouse later that year. Hughes enlisted into the Confederate army during the war; he eventually surrendered at Appomattox Court House on April 9th 1865 ( days after Lee’s surrender). He was captured along with most of his command at Shenandoah Junction near Plainsville Virginia and takenprisoner until May 1865 when he was exchanged into Union hands at Fort Donelson Tennessee according to some sources; others claim he died as a POW soon afterwards at Andersonville Georgia or Libby Jail Texas.. In any case Hughes' story does not end here however; after his release from prison he returned to Maryland Heights where he continued farming until his death in 1944.. Today we still enjoy some delicious traditional German recipes enjoyed by our ancestors such as Berliner Weisse (a white wine beer), Kugeln mit Kartoffeln und Bohnen (kugels made with boiled potatoes & eggs) and Friede Gottes (peaceful peace). Some other interesting facts about our town include that it was listed on both The Topeka Capital-Journal's Best Places To Live list for 2004 out of 589 communities statewide[1], has been featured on numerous travel shows such as "Homegrown", " America's Next Top Model" etc., has also been profiled extensively by publications like “The Denver Post”,[2] “The Huffington Post”,[3] “Washington Monthly”[4]and more recently [2015], included amongst 20 Towns For Growth On The Front Lines Of Our Digital Age
The first European settlers in the area were French Canadians who moved to Maryland Heights in 1810. The town was named after General James H. Monacan, a U.S. Army officer who fought in the Mexican-American War and served as governor of Missouri from 1811 to 1813. In 1834, the town became part of Kansas City, Missouri when that state was formed from parts of Missouri and Kansas.
