A post office was established in 1842, and three years later a sawmill was founded by Reuben Hickman and others. The town grew rapidly during the 1850s and 1860s due to its location near two major railroads and its proximity to several manufacturing villages including Topeka and Overland Park. In 1881, Marshall became the county seat of Marshall County after it was chosen over Overland Park because of its larger population density. During World War II,Marshall played an important role in helping to produce munitions for the war effort by productioning armored cars, airplanes, artillery shells, tanks, trucks, radios and other equipment for military use. The local industries also produced foods such as cornmeal which were shipped out to troops stationed overseas; many homes still have original farmstead kitchen gardens that are used today to grow vegetables or fruits during warm weather months After World War II ended in 1945, business activity slowed down as people returned home to rebuild their lives following wartime devastation In 1951,the first school building was constructed; it burned down less than a year later but led to the construction of a second school building which still stands today . Business growth resumed with new housing being erected throughout late 1960s through early 1970s which resulted in increased retail traffic .later that decade however another recession hitthe community hard causing many residents to leave Marshalls historic downtown district for newer neighborhoods closer to Interstate 470 . By 2000 there remained only about 50 residents living within city limits while most businesses had closed or relocated away from downtown since then
