Marshall was founded in 1836 by Daniel Marshall, a slaveholder and landowner. The town developed as a cotton plantation town, with large plantations including the Marshall-Dixon Plantation and the Phelps and Whitney Paper Mill. In 1865, the Union Army burned down the Phelps and Whitney Paper Mill, which left Marshall without an industry. The town gradually declined after that point until it disappeared altogether in the 1970s.
