Grant and encamped at Rock Island Arsenal near Marshall where he met with local farmers about making an assault upon Jacksonport which would have severed Union communications between St Louis and Cairo Illinois On July 25th 1863 Union forces led by Major General George Meade overran Confederate positions at Camden Church Hill northeast of Marshall while supplies were moving back into Jacksonport; this event is commemorated by a plaque on that hill today later that year Union forces attacked Corinth from northwest but failed to take that city as well as nearby Tupelo By 1865 both sides had withdrawn their armies leaving behind large amounts of property including much agricultural land which passed through hands until it was acquired by private ownership or development beginning around 1930 when most of what remains today came into public hands The town has always been home to a number of industries such as papermaking, food processing and manufacturing before being gradually converted to residential areas during the late 20th century as job opportunities increased outside farming/manufacturing sectors
