The first white person to settle in Marshall was James Marshall who arrived in 1821. He and his family built a log cabin on a creek near what is now the town site. In 1825, he married Jane Wickman and they founded the settlement of Marshall along the White River. The name of the settlement derived from James Marsh's brother-in-law, Amos French (1793 - 1865), who had named his son for him. When Kansas became an independent state in 1861, most ofJeff County followed suit and split off as Marshall County. However, some residents in western portions ofthe county continued to call themselves "Marshall". Marshal was renamed to its current name after General Ulysses S. Grant visited the area during his 1872 campaign for president and noted that there were no settlements within reach of Springfield but alligator hunting could be reached by traveling east on I-70 to Farmington and then south on US 61 to Marshalltown or north on US 160 to Anadarko. In 1896,during eastern Kansas' general election campaign General George Washington Carver offered free land to anyone who would move into one of two designated townships located within three miles (5 km) of Wichita Falls: Carver Township or Nighthawk Township which had been established as part of Wichita County in 1840 with about 500 people living there before it was merged with Jefferson County in 1870). A group led by Thaddeus Stevens bought 2/3rds interest in Nighthawk Township from JH Wiley & Sons associates for $2 000 while retaining 3/8ths interests for their own use; this set off a lengthy battle between Stevens and Wiley over title ownership until finally Whitney sold out his interest back to Stevens for $8000 on November 10th 1899 (the day after Carver's death). Marshall was founded in 1819 by a group of men from Missouri. The town grew quickly and soon had a school, grocery store, and post office. In 1840, the town granted free land to a group of blacksmiths who built the first African-American home in Marshall. The blacksmiths helped settle Marshall and continued to make improvements to the community until its incorporation as a city in 1907.
