Although Union troops easily repulsed these attacks and drove back Confederate forces into adjacent Indiana Territory, Buell thought he would be able to take advantage of this situation by crossing the state line into Union Territory without being detected by Confederate forces waiting inside Missouri. This plan did not go well; Confederate forces surrounded his force at Taney County Park before driving them back towards Independence where they finally surrendered unconditionally on April 12th following an hours long battle. The post-war period saw several changes for Marshall: firstly, many farmers left to return home following the war; secondly, there was an increase in industry due to new transportation routes opening up thanks to railroad construction; thirdly tensions began building up between local businesses and what became known as "the mob" – groups of men who operated independently outside of law enforcement authority - which ultimately led to violence during prohibition times (1912-1920). These denominations each have their own history museum within town limits which Open House weekends every May through October inclusive In 1865 when Indian raids starting happening along Route 66 northward from Springfield MO., general Ulysses S Grant ordered Major General Lewis Cass appointed commander at major strategic points along route66 including Marshalltown MO., making it easier for military supplies getting into eastern Arkansas safely via those areas newly acquired by Lincoln Administration . Cass then ordered Captain George A Hodge USN drummer boy stationed at Marshalltown to lead militia unit against any Indians encountered . On September 10 1862 Captain Hodge's unit encountering some 150 Native Americans near present day Blue Springs MO., engagements lasted all night resulting in 4 dead , 15 wounded , 6 missing including Capt Hodge himself
