Marshall is a small town in northeastern Missouri, United States. The population was 5,674 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield metropolitan area. The townsite of Marshall was organized on November 8, 1835 by James W. Marshall and his father-in-law Parson Weems from the town of Palmyra in Leavenworth County. The town was named for General James W. Marshall (1784-1857), who had served as an officer in the Mexican–American War and as a U.S. Representative from Missouri during the early 19th century. A post office was established at Marshall on December 15, 1836, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The first store opened at what is now Main Street and Broadway in 1837; a tannery followed two years later along Broadway near where present day Elm Street meets Main Street. By 1840, there were five stores/factories operating in Marshalls three blocks long with a population of about 100 people each; these businesses produced produce such as apples, grapes, pears, etc., for local consumption or distribution to other settlements in the area A school district wasorganized on February 14, 1839 with four schools: one for boys only (Plymouth School), one for girls only (University School), one for colored students (Caroline School), and one for free children (Fulton School).
